Over the years some of the letters that we have sent to incarcerated people have been returned to us, always with a form claiming that the information we sent violates prison policies around letters. The reasons given appear both arbitrary and inconsistent, citing reasons such as "copyright violations", or not accepting items like "internet printouts" or "photocopies".
These forms represent a concerning trend in prisons, creating even more barriers to people inside accessing information and resources. Please see below for some examples of the forms we have received with returned letters:
