Position Description

Volunteers with Write On! will answer letters that contain requests for information from people in prison in federal and provincial prisons in Canada. The requests will be assigned and tracked centrally.  Volunteers will assess the request and provide the research and/or information for the person in prison in a timely manner.  Volunteers will adhere to a set of guidelines, consistent with the mission, goals, and values of Write On!

Skills and Abilities required

• Excellent writing skills

• Awareness of social justice issues, specifically issues with prisons in Canada

• Good judgment

• Good research skills

• Demonstrated experience with privacy and confidentiality issues

• Reliability and trustworthiness

Screening Process

Write On! reserves the right to screen applicants. All volunteer applicants will be asked to fill out the Write On! application, which will be reviewed before determining whether they will be invited to volunteer.

Orientation & Training

All volunteers will be required to attend training on how to write letters, and also to learn about Write On’s mission, values, goals, and policies. In addition, all volunteers will have their letters reviewed by the training committee before being given the go ahead to mail them.
